What a change of pace
Here's a sneak peek at our final report. lengthy, lengthy.Tilak Varma's record-breaking hundred lifted the Mumbai Indians from 103 for 4 in 14 overs, giving them the dramatic boost they needed to climb off the bottom of the league. After six IPL games without a wicket, the momentum they developed at the conclusion of the innings was so strong that it resulted in a first-ball wicket for Jasprit Bumrah. The Gujarat Titans wickets simply kept falling, ending MI's four-match losing run. In the end, it was so dramatic that GT lost by 99 runs, falling just short of Varma's 101.

| Tilak Varma achieves IPL triumph on a 45-ball rollercoaster |
Varma achieved the fastest century for MI, tied with Sanath Jayasuriya's 45-ball effort in the first IPL, with 82 runs in the final six overs, the highest anyone has scored in that time frame in an IPL innings. After failing to hit a boundary in the first 20 balls, Varma sensationally achieved this, marking it the greatest IPL score following such a start.
Naman Dhir may have scored the harder runs when the GT bowlers were on fire—45 off 32 from No. 3 and after they had been reduced to 44 for 3—without taking anything away from Varma. Bowlers who didn't follow their plans handed Varma some gifts, but Varma's reaction to the mistakes was scary and probably led to further mistakes.

Ghazanfar adds the last details
There's nothing more aggressive than a mystery spinner. Kagiso Rbada and Mohammed Siraj are removed in the same over by Allah Ghazanfar slowing it down. Tilak Varma scored one more than GT, who are bowled for 100. This has been such a turnaround. They will also have a significant NRR increase after the 99-run victory.Apr 20, 2026, 10:47 PM
All gifts are accepted by Ashwani
GT hitters are lining up to provide MI fielders with catching practice as Ashwani Kumar bowls into the surface with a large leg-side boundary. The most recent person to be caught at deep square on the pull is Shahrukh Khan. Ashwani has taken four wickets. GT is 86 for 8. To beat Tilak Varma, they still need to score 16. And 11 to what they conceded in the final six overs.Apr 20, 2026, 10:43 PM
Ashwani continues to strike
In the fourteenth over, Rashid Khan attempts to charge Ashwani Kumar, but the left-arm fast hits the pitch. Rashid gets caught at extra cover after being struck by the bat's sticker. In 12.2, it is 85 for 7. Kagiso Rabada, who bowled brilliantly, is out.Apr 20, 2026, 10:38 PM
Ashwani rejects Tewatia
The Mumbai Indians made every effort to avoid taking this wicket. The umpires reassessed the final ball of the eleventh inning after calling it over a wide. The umpires were spot on, according to replays, as the bouncer went five centimetres over Rahul Tewatia's head. Ashwani Kumar was forced to bowl that ball once more, and when Tewatia attempted to run him down to third, they were only able to get an advantage. GT 79 for six.Apr 20, 2026, 10:19 PM
Santner continues to outperform Phillips
Mitchell Santner has removed Glenn Phillips in 44 balls for just 48 runs on three separate occasions. GT 55 for fiveApr 20, 2026, 10:14 PM
Santner wins Washington
After initiating MI's comeback with the bat, Naman Dhir has now produced an incredible performance in the field. When Mitchell Santner bowls to Washington Sundar, he uses the large boundary on the leg side, but the pull almost goes all the way. Dhir is able to stay inside the rope by catching it overhead at full length. He must exert all of his muscle to stay inside and retain the ball because there is nowhere near him for the rebound. GT 54 for 4 in 7.2.Apr 20, 2026, 10:12 PM
The major three of GT are out in PP
Gill, Sudharsan, and Buttler are playing together for GT for the twenty-first time. For the first time, they have all been eliminated during the powerplay.Apr 20, 2026, 10:07 PM
Powerplays cancel each other out
MI has held GT to 45 for 3 in the powerplay thanks to a strong final over from Krish Bhagat. Their own score was 46 for 3. To participate in this battle, GT will now require some wizardry akin to that of Tilak Varma.Apr 20, 2026, 10:02 PM
Ashwani receives Gill
This is the monster fish. Ashwani Kumar hasn't allowed Shubman Gill to escape the powerplay, which is what we were really hoping to see. In the end, it was a nothing shot. Gill simply swots a pull shot after Ashwani knocks the ball in. He makes no attempt to hit a six or to keep it down. Additionally, he is taking on the large side. Easy catch in the deep square. 14 out of 13 are gone. In 4.4 overs, it is 40 for 3.Apr 20, 2026, 9:57 PM
In the first over, Bhagat goes for six
Krish Bhagat's height comes first. He is undoubtedly taller than six feet. The second is a smooth, flowing action where he experiences a high after the release. It's in the mid-130s. In his opening over, he overpitches once, and Shubman Gill scores four off the ball. In four overs, GT scored 35 for 3.Apr 20, 2026, 9:52 PM
Gill smacks Bumrah for two fours
After being dismissed twice by his India teammate, Shubman Gill entered this match with just 34 runs off 38 balls from Jasprit Bumrah. The ball has been misbehaving and has also seamed past his bat, but he has struck 8 off 7 today with two brilliant fours through the off side. In three overs, GT 29 for 3.Apr 20, 2026, 9:44 PM
Buttler is given to Pandya
The Mumbai Indians' current momentum is fantastic. Now, everything is going MI's way. Jos Buttler is given out on the field, but Hardik Pandya gets the second ball he pitches to seam back in noticeably. This appears to be heading down leg. Review reveals that GT is 5 for 2 and the ball is only clipping the top of the leg.Apr 20, 2026, 9:35 PM
Bumrah hits the first ball following Varma's century
In the IPL, Japsrit Bumrah bowled 153 balls without taking a wicket. Then, with the fresh ball, he bowls a soft, full ball, which B Sai Sudharshan immediately slices to cover-point. During this dry spell, he has bowled a lot better deliveries than this one.Apr 20, 2026, 9:30 PM
100 from No. 5 or below
After David Miller's two and Yusuf Pathan's one, this was just the fourth IPL century from No. 5 or lower.Apr 20, 2026, 9:29 PM
Outstanding acceleration
Something more has been worked out by Shiva Jayaraman. This was the wildest and largest acceleration of any inning in which a batter gained fifty or more runs after twenty balls. More than any other IPL innings, the SR difference between the first 20 balls and the remainder of the innings was 251. The fifth effort on that list comes from Cooper Connolly last night. His score increased from 15 off 20 to 87 off 46. Varma's score increased from 17 off 20 to 101 off 46.Apr 20, 2026, 9:24 PM
Super Six
Tilak Varma struck 82 runs in the final six overs, more than any batter in the IPL, surpassing Quinton de Kock's 80 for LSG vs. KKR in 2022.Apr 20, 2026, 9:23 PM
Varma 100 propels a faltering MI to 199
This is the right kind of carnage. Despite Hardik Pandya and Sherfaine Rutherford playing at less than a run per ball, the past six overs have yielded 99 runs. This is due to Tilak Varma's 82 runs off just 23 balls in this time frame. At the beginning of that time, he was 19 out of 22. Without detracting from this fantastic hitting, bowlers' inability to follow their strategies was largely to blame. Prasidh Krishna began by consistently pitching it up despite taking a field for the short ball, which has been so successful for him over the years. In the eighteenth over, Ashok Sharma followed suit. This is tied with the legendary Sanath Jayasuriya as the fastest hundred for Mumbai Indians.Apr 20, 2026, 9:07 PM
Varma's change
Mayank Agarwal, who got 89 off 60 against DC in 2020, was the only player to reach 70 or more in an IPL innings without striking a boundary in the first 20 balls before to today.Apr 20, 2026, 9:02 PM
Varma dissects Ashok Sharma
6 4 4 6 6 0Although Ashok Sharma's IPL career has gotten off to a great start, almost every bowler is destroyed in Twenty20 cricket. Today is Ashok's turn, and in the eighteenth over, Tilak Varma destroys him. Ashok is simply dismantled after trying everything but the yorker. However, the final ball strikes Varma off the inside edge of the box. MI 167 for 4 in 18. He is 75 ff 38.
Apr 20, 2026, 8:56 PM
4-0-31-0 Rashid
Rashid Khan nearly doubles his total of 16 in the first three overs when he returns to bowl his final over. Tilak Arma sends him back over his head for a six after he overpitches the initial ball. The subsequent ball is clipped away for four because it is too short. MI 141 for 4 in 17.The remaining overs should be bowled by Ashok, Siraj, and Krishna.
Apr 20, 2026, 8:50 PM
Rabada restores the order
In the sixteenth over, Hardik Pandya tries to run short balls down behind square, but Kagiso Rabada beats his bat three times, all on pace. MI 126 for four. Rabada concludes with a 4-0-33-3 analysis. Excellent, fast-paced attacking bowlingApr 20, 2026, 8:46 PM
Krishna is defeated by Varma
6 4 4 2 1w 1 1Prasidh Krishna bowls an over full of full balls to Tilak Varma, who capitalises just as we are gushing about his short lengths. He has the field for a short ball, which is confusing. Varma easily clears him twice when the mid-off is up. Varma's only short ball is the wide. In 15 overs, MI 122 for 4.
Apr 20, 2026, 8:34 PM
Short lengths and a tall Krishna
Prasidh Krishna has taken 24 wickets with short and short-of-a-length balls since the beginning of the most recent IPL. With fifteen, Josh Hazlewood is ranked second. Third place goes to Hardik Pandya with 12. Only Anshul Kamboj and Jasprit Bumrah have a better economy than his 7.84 per over among fast bowlers who have bowled at least 30 balls on these lengths.Apr 20, 2026, 8:31 PM
Krishna obtains Dhir
An iconic Prasidh Krishna wicket. There are already two short balls in the over that result in a single. Now, with another short ball that Dhir is unable to control on the pull, he makes use of the large leg-side boundary. From deep square leg, Kagiso Rabada takes the catch as it rushes in. MI 96 for 4 in 12.3 overs, lost for a well-made 45 off 32.Apr 20, 2026, 8:23 PM
Washington is attacked by Dhir
1 6 4 1 0 1Shubman Gill tries to get in an over of offspin after Rashid Khan extracts a turn, but Naman Dhir doesn't heed Washington Sundar's small-turning offbreaks. Dhir simply step-hits a six and a four after Tilak Varma successfully takes a single first ball. By no means are these half-volleys, but Dhir has just smashed Washington to the ground like a medium pacer since he is not spinning the ball and hitting it in at upwards of 100ks. Dhir 42 off 29, MI 88 for 3 in 11 overs.
Apr 20, 2026, 8:18 PM
Slow healing
Naman Dhir, who was promoted to No. 3, has shown promise, but he and Tilak Varma are unable to go too far in attack after taking three early wickets. 29 runs were scored in the first four overs following the powerrplay. Dhir is 31 out of 26. In his two overs, Rashid has given up just nine runs. After ten overs, MI is 75 for 3.Apr 20, 2026, 8:09 PM
Two bowlers and two powerplays
This is just the third occasion in the IPL's past ten years that a side has bowled out two consecutive powerplays with just two bowlers. Throughout the previous two powerplays, Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada have bowled for results of 3 for 37 and 3 for 46.This last occurred with Deepak Chahar and Harbhajan Singh for CSK in 2019 and Nadre Burger and Trent Boult for RR last year. Many thanks to Shiva Jayaraman, the genius, for figuring this out.
In eight overs, MI 58 for 3.
Apr 20, 2026, 8:01 PM
Suryakumar is eliminated by Rabada
This is Kagiso Rabada's appropriate, fast-paced, combative spell. He has gone three straight for the second consecutive game, just like Siraj. He is guilty of attacking the first two balls too directly, going full, straight, and quickly. Suryakumar Yadav is capable of taking six and four from them. Rabada then adjusts the length, obtains seam movement, and uses the inside edge for a single, but the length is just slightly off. It is beyond 150ks when he finally bowls a nice length, and it seams back in to flatten two of the three stumps behind Suryakumar. What a sight. MI 44 for 3 in 5.5 overs.Apr 20, 2026, 7:56 PM
3-0-15-0 Siraj
Kagiso Rabada may have taken the wickets, but Mmohammed Siraj bowled equally effectively. He has bowled through the powerplay for the second straight game, simply hitting good length with a combination of wobble-seam deliveries that tend to seam in and seam-up outswingers. In five overs, MI 32 for 2.Apr 20, 2026, 7:50 PM
Rabada defeats de Kock
There must have been numerous instances of this competition in the South African nets. Quinton de Kock, who has only been dismissed once in non-international T20 cricket, entered this encounter with 140 runs off 96 balls against Rabada. This one began with a leg-side half-volley from Rabada, which de Kock hit for a six. He then cut away from four after receiving a short ball that provided him breadth. However, Rabada eventually scores with a 150-kilometer short ball that both hurries and slightly cramps de Kock. The top edge is claimed by Rabada himself. enormous wicket. In 3.3 overs, it is 25 for 2.Apr 20, 2026, 7:39 PM
Malewar descends early
The young Danish Malewar's debut wasn't the best. He shuffles across in an attempt to knock Kagiso Rabada over the leg side after hitting two singles off the thick outside edge. He is trapped in front as the ball nips back in. Rabada made a strong comeback after serving Quinton de Kock a leg-side half-volley first up.MI's batting order has changed, with Naman Dhir starting ahead of Suryakumar Yadav. MI is 10 for 1 in 1.5 overs.
Apr 20, 2026, 7:35 PM
Siraj is off to a steady start
In the first over, Moahmmed Siraj gives up just two singles while beating the edge of both openers once each. Quinton de Kock was defeated by a swinger that seamed away from him, while Danish Malewar was defeated by an outswinger. MI 2 for nothing.Apr 20, 2026, 7:18 PM
MI makes two debuts, and the same GT requests that they bat first
The Mumbai Indians, who are at the bottom of the table and whose standing as a major side is in jeopardy, placed their reputation as the greatest scouts front and centre by making the debuts of two players who have never played senior Twenty20 cricket. Malewar, a 22-year-old Danish batsman from Vidarbha, and Krish Bhagat, a Punjabi fast bowler. Due to possible moisture, the hosts Gujarat Titans won the toss and decided to field on a black-soil pitch, hence Malewar was going to be tried first.Ryan Rickelton's countryman Quinton de Kock, who scored a century in his first game of the season, was firmly entrenched as their top opener, and Malewar was supposed to start in his stead. Due to a hamstring strain, Rohit Sharma remained sidelined.
After the seasoned bowler was dismissed for 45 in his 2.3 overs in the previous game, Bhagat took Deepak Chahar's place in the starting lineup. Shardul Thakur, who went for 42 in his three in the previous game, was dismissed by the returning Mitchell Santner.
Gujarat Titans maintained the lineup that won them their third straight game in an attempt to climb into the top three with a victory here. Rahul Tewatia was pushed into the possible Impact Players and Shahrukh Khan into the first XI.
Mumbai Indians 1 Danish Malewar, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Naman Dhir, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Hardik Pandya (capt.), 6 Tilak Varma, 7 Sherfane Rutherford, 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Krish Bhagat, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 AM Ghazanfar

GT's peculiar methods
The Gujarat Titans are the IPL's most successful team since their introduction, but they do so in a peculiar method. They don't necessarily have the deepest batting, but they also put a lot of effort into their bowling, take the fewest chances, hit the fewest sixes, and rely mostly on fours. This season is an exciting test of their T20 style in a rapidly evolving IPL.GT appears to have intensified their tried-and-true style of play, which involves taking wickets and smashing fours rather than sixes. Right at the top, the tone is established. For instance, neither B Sai Sudharsan nor Shubman Gill made a special effort to interfere with the bowlers last year. They only played 14% and 11% balls in the air against good lengths and hard lengths in the powerplay. Against these balls, Gill's control rate was 77%. Sudharsan's overall strike rate was 147, whereas Gill's was 155.

By that measure, MI is by far the worst-performing team. For the season, their fast bowlers had an incredible average of 65.81. The next-worst squad on this list, PBKS, averages a much better 37.41.
This season, three MI fast bowlers have averages of 50 or higher: Trent Boult (110.00), Deepak Chahar (87.00), and Hardik Pandya (67.00). Bumrah has bowled 19 overs without taking a wicket.

Gujarat Titans (probable): 1 Shubman Gill (capt), 2 B Sai Sudharsan, 3 Jos Buttler (wk), 4 Washington Sundar, 5 Glenn Phillips, 6 Rahul Tewatia, 7 M Shahrukh Khan, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Ashok Sharma, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Mohammed Siraj, 12 Prasidh Krishna.
Mitchell Santner and Rohit Sharma were absent from MI's Thursday game against PBKS due to illness. Rohit returned to batting in the nets after MI bowling coach Paras Mhambrey certified on Sunday that both were healthy.
On Thursday, MI struggled to balance their lineup against PBKS without Rohit. Trent Boult was left out to reduce the number of foreign players to four after Quinton de Kock entered the team and made a fantastic comeback century. With one ball remaining in MI's innings, Mayank Rawat, the Indian player who replaced Boult, made an unimpressive debut by stepping in at No. 8 to occupy the non-striker's end and not bowling his offspin at all. Boult or Corbin Bosch will return to bolster the speed bowling, and Rohit will probably take Ryan Rickelton's spot. Santner and AM Ghazanfar, who claimed two powerplay wickets against PBKS, would be difficult choices for MI.
Mumbai Indians (probable): 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Naman Dhir, 5 Tilak Varma, 6 Hardik Pandya (capt), 7 Sherfane Rutherford, 8 Mitchell Santner/AM Ghazanfar, 9 Trent Boult/Corbin Bosch, 10 Shardul Thakur, 11 Deepak Chahar, 12 Jasprit Bumrah.

Sherfane Rutherford is an excellent T20 player who was possibly miscast as a finisher at MI. In MI's previous match against RCB, he produced an undefeated 31-ball 71, but by the time he arrived at No. 6, the game was nearly over. He was unlucky to enter late against PBKS and face Marco Jansen and Arshdeep Singh, who kept hitting reverse-swinging yorkers against him. Since Hardik Pandya, Tilak Varma, and Rutherford all favour entry spots that let them get their eye in before the slog overs start, MI is in a difficult position because they have now shifted Naman Dhir up to No. 4. Is it possible for MI to fully utilise Rutherford against his former team?
Apr 20, 2026, 4:08 PM
The Mumbai Indians (MI), on the other hand, have employed 17 players thus far due to both injury and form problems. The only team to go further into their roster is the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Stability and standing on the points table are typically highly correlated, and this is the case for both GT and MI heading into their match in Ahmedabad on Monday. MI has a four-game losing run, while GT has won three straight games.
However, if the small group of players who perform a lot of the hard lifting, especially with the bat, have a bad day, GT are likely to be tripped up. There may be such a thing as too much steadiness. The fact that M Shahrukh Khan, their normal Impact Player when they chase, has two DNBs and faced just 12 balls over three innings without getting out once speaks everything about how much they rely on their top three of Gill, B Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler. Rahul Tewatia, Glenn Phillips, and Washington Sundar haven't batted much either.
Therefore, this could be MI's huge opportunity to assault GT's top three with their strongest attacking weapons while front-loading with the ball. Naturally, it's easier said than done when your offence is overly dependent on one player, Jasprit Bumrah, who struggles for both economy and penetration.
Trivia and statistics
The four fast bowlers that GT has deployed in every match are Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada, Prasidh Krishna, and Ashok Sharma. They have been the IPL 2026's top wicket-taking force. With a collective pace-bowling average of 24.89, GT leads the league.By that measure, MI is by far the worst-performing team. For the season, their fast bowlers had an incredible average of 65.81. The next-worst squad on this list, PBKS, averages a much better 37.41.

Will Rohit Sharma return to the top?
This season, GT has used the same XII whenever possible, and after winning three straight games, it doesn't seem likely that they will alter that lineup.Gujarat Titans (probable): 1 Shubman Gill (capt), 2 B Sai Sudharsan, 3 Jos Buttler (wk), 4 Washington Sundar, 5 Glenn Phillips, 6 Rahul Tewatia, 7 M Shahrukh Khan, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Ashok Sharma, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Mohammed Siraj, 12 Prasidh Krishna.

Conditions and pitch
In Ahmedabad, Pitch No. 5 has always favoured the team batting first. The side batting first has won four of the last seven games played here—three in each of the IPLs 2024 and 2025 and two in this year's T20 World Cup, which includes the dramatic encounter between Afghanistan and South Africa—while the pursuing team has won two. The first-innings run rate (9.62) has been much greater than the second-innings run rate (9.14) in all seven of these games, two of which were day games. Therefore, it is possible that the team that wins the toss will decide to bat. However, the extreme heat in Ahmedabad—a maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius is predicted for Monday—may make dew more likely.Apr 20, 2026, 4:34 PM
In the limelight
Mohammed Siraj's new-ball bowling has been entertaining to watch, but he's been somewhat overlooked because he hasn't taken many wickets. Only Mohammed Shami, Rasikh Salam, and Sunil Narine have higher powerplay economy rates than Siraj's 7.41 out of all bowlers who have bowled at least 30 balls in the phase this season. Although he has only claimed two powerplay wickets in five games, T20 wicket totals are frequently misleading, so if he delivers another burst of explosive new-ball swing on Monday, he might be rewarded.Sherfane Rutherford is an excellent T20 player who was possibly miscast as a finisher at MI. In MI's previous match against RCB, he produced an undefeated 31-ball 71, but by the time he arrived at No. 6, the game was nearly over. Stability vs instability
IPL 2026 has been all about stability for Gujarat Titans (GT). Only 13 players have been utilised in their five games thus far, and the 13th player was only used when Shubman Gill, their captain, was sidelined due to injury. The only team that has employed less players is Punjab Kings (PBKS), whose starting players have not yet sustained any injuries.
