Head coach Ricky Ponting lifted the spirits in the locker room after Punjab Kings (PBKS) suffered their first IPL 2026 setback in their eighth game of the season, stating that they were still leading the points table. The line was repeated by their captain, Shreyas Iyer, following another defeat in the subsequent game. However, PBKS is no longer leading the standings after suffering three straight losses.

| David Miller scored 51 off 28 |
However, there doesn't seem to be a pattern to their losses. They were unable to defend 222 against the Rajasthan Royals. They made just 163 for 9 as they batted first against the Gujarat Titans. They were unable to chase down 236 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. But in those outings, their fielding has been inadequate.
However, they had such a great start to the season that, if they defeat the Delhi Capitals (DC) on Monday in Dharamsala, their second home, they would reclaim the top spot. However, a fourth straight loss might make it more difficult for them to place in the top two.
Is DC able to lift itself?
DC, who have dropped five of its previous six games, is also having trouble. Their captain, Axar Patel, stated following their most recent loss that they would strive to test their bench strength and get ready for the upcoming season. Axar's remarks provided us with insight into his assessment of his team's chances, even if DC still has a remote chance of qualifying for the playoffs.
DC will be eliminated from the playoffs if they lose to PBKS following Royal Challengers Bengaluru's victory over the Mumbai Indians on Sunday. When the two teams faced off earlier in the season in Delhi, PBKS achieved the most successful chase in Twenty20 cricket, chasing down 265 with seven balls remaining. Can DC turn things around and finish the season 1-1?
Omarzai joins the PBKS team
PBKS fast-bowling coach James Hopes suggested that they might "switch things up a little bit" and use Harpreet Brar as the second spinner now that Azmatullah Omarzai has joined the team.
Punjab Kings (probable): 1 Priyansh Arya, 2 Prabhsimran Singh (wk), 3 Cooper Connolly, 4 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Azmatullah Omarzai, 7 Shashank Singh, 8 Marco Jansen, 9 Harpreet Brar, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal, 12 Vijaykumar Vyshak
DC might wait to test their bench depth and field an unaltered team because they are still in the running for the playoffs.
Delhi Capitals (probable): 1 Pathum Nissanka, 2 KL Rahul (wk), 3 Nitish Rana, 4 Sameer Rizvi, 5 Tristan Stubbs, 6 Axar Patel (capt), 7 Ashutosh Sharma, 8 Vipraj Nigam, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Kuldeep Yadav, 11 Lungi Ngidi, 12 Mukesh Kumar
Will Arshdeep Singh intervene?
This is one of Arshdeep Singh's worst IPL seasons. He has had an economy rate of higher than ten in seven of the ten games. His economy rate was eight or lower in the other three games, but as the head of PBKS' pace assault, he needs to be more reliable.
One of the few bright spots in DC's otherwise dismal season has been KL Rahul. With 468 runs with a strike rate of 180.00, he is now the tournament's third-highest run scorer. He scored an undefeated 152 against PBKS in addition to three half-centuries. Can he help his team get off to a great start on Monday?
Is it more difficult to bowl first?
Teams batting first have won four of the five IPL matches played in Dharamsala since the beginning of 2023. Therefore, choosing to bowl first after winning the toss might not be as simple. While sporadic showers are possible during the day, they shouldn't pose a threat to the game. In the evening, the temperature will be approximately 14°C.
What they stated
"The ground was damp last night, but the ball wasn't getting wet, so it was slippery rather than dewy. The captain who wins the toss bowls will likely be the approach used in every game in this tournament, in my opinion. However, we'll need to evaluate the circumstances when we arrive tomorrow. Based on the data, there is a slight tendency to bat first.
James Hopes, the fast-bowling coach for the Punjab Kings
"We've had a patchy season. We sit here now and look at a couple of games when we had our chances, and I believe that when you play in the IPL and at the top level of cricket against elite players, you have to seize those opportunities, and we probably haven't done so with enough ruthlessness."

DC opens versus Arshdeep
In Twenty20 cricket, Rahul's strike rate against Arshdeep is 168.75 (81 off 48), while Pathum Nissanka's is 172.34 (81 off 47).
In the IPL, Yuzvendra Chahal has removed Nitish Rana six times, more than any other bowler in the competition. Against him, Rana has scored 97 runs with a strike rate of 119.75 off 81 balls.
In the IPL, Shreyas Iyer's strike rate against Kuldeep Yadav was 178.46. However, Axar has kept him largely silent (138.98).
This season, Marcus Stoinis' strike rate in the final overs (17–20) is 250.00. Only Tilak Varma (276.47), Tim David (270.00), and Donovan Ferreira (264.86) have higher strike rates among players who have faced at least 30 balls in that phase.
This season, Connolly will not be bowling
Cooper Connolly, an all-rounder for the Punjab Kings, has stated that he will not use his left-arm spin this season. Due to a back problem, he travelled to Australia for scans during PBKS's extended vacation. However, he recently affirmed that we won't roll his arm over this IPL in a pre-match conversation with the commentators.
DC will bowl and make five adjustments
Delhi Capitals choose to bowl against the Punjab Kings.
In a crucial match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Dharamsala, Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Axar Patel won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Four of the five IPL matches played here since the beginning of 2023 have been won by teams batting first, but Axar said, "It's a fresh wicket, and there's help for fast bowlers early on."
DC changed five things. They introduced Auqib Nabi, Madhav Tiwari, David Miller, Sahil Parakh, and Abishek Porel. Pathum Nissanka and Kuldeep Yadav were the most well-known among those excluded.
Ben Dwarshuis made his debut with PBKS. Lockie Ferguson, who has a little niggle, was substituted by him. Neither the Impact Player bench nor the bat-first XI included Vijaykumar Vyshak. Therefore, one of Praveen Dubey, Yash Thakur, or Harpreet Brar will probably enter as an Impact Player when it comes time to bowl.
Dharamsala has consistently produced excellent scores. The square's dimensions are 63 and 65 metres. The straight line is 72 metres long.
Punjab Kings: 1 Priyansh Arya, 2 Prabhsimran Singh (wk), 3 Cooper Connolly, 4 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Suryansh Shedge, 7 Shashank Singh, 8 Marco Jansen, 9 Ben Dwarshuis, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal

Arya's first-ball six is off the mark
6 0 0 5w 6 1 4
Before this game, Priyansh Arya's dismissal off the short ball a few times had been the main topic of conversation. Mitchell Starc, however, begins with a complete delivery outside off stump, possibly in search of early swing and seam movement. However, Priyansh simply lofts it over cover-point for a six because it is too full. In the second match, he had again started his account with a first-ball six off Nabi.
With the fourth delivery of the over, Starc does go short, but it is too short and goes over both the batter and the keeper for five wides. Arya assists Starc in getting the ball to deep midwicket after he bowls a length ball on the body. It simply clears the boundary rider while travelling miles in the air.
Starc goes full once more with Prabhsimran Singh on strike for the last ball of the over. However, to drive it between cover and point for four, the batter opens the bat's face.
After 1, PBKS 22/0
The most costly first over for Starc
On that Starc over, Sampath Bandarupalli has some figures.
In Twenty20 cricket, Mitchell Starc has delivered the opening over of an innings 93 times. He had only been struck for a six on the first ball twice. Yashasvi Jaiswal cleared the rope in Jaipur during the preceding IPL 2026 season.
He has never given up 22 runs in the opening over of a Twenty20 innings. When Starc was with KKR in 2024, the previous high was 15 against the Delhi Capitals.
For Starc, just one over?
Unless he desires a different outcome, that is how it appears. Axar turns to Lungi Ngidi after Nabi goes for 12 and Arya pulls him over midwicket for a six. Arya greets him by hitting consecutive sixes off the opening two balls. The second was sent over extra cover, while the first was dragged over midwicket. Out of the first 13 balls he has encountered, he has blasted five sixes.
Ngidi circles the wicket and delivers his slower, dipping ball directly at the stumps. Arya returns it to the bowler for defence. He next delivers another slower ball, but this one is outside off. Arya takes PBSK to 50 by slicing it over the backwards point for four. The DC-17 comes off that Ngidi over has no reprieve.

Arya scores a fifty off 24 balls
Even though we haven't seen Starc since the first over, some normalcy has returned in the last several overs. Arya and Prabhsimran, in particular, are troubled by Nabi and Mukesh Kumar's substitute ball moving off the seam. Before taking a streaky boundary, the latter was on ten off eight.
Arya has reached his fifty with a single off the opening ball of the sixth over. He was on 39 off 15 at one time, so coming off 24 balls feels a little slow. Nabi beats Arya's outside edge multiple times in that over, nearly squaring him up with the final delivery, so seam bowlers still have some assistance. In that over, he just gives up two singles.
After six, PBKS 72/0
Iyer enters at No. 3, and Prabhsimran falls for 18
Apart from the first boundary he hit off Starc in the opening over, he didn't appear to be fluent. He attempted, but failed, to charge down the ground. Mukesh is now bowling one at the body. Prabhsimran attempts an aerial strike but ultimately lobs it in the direction of a deep backward square leg. Nabi rushes in and dives to finish the catch with a slide. He hits 18 off 15 balls.
At number three, Shreyas Iyer enters ahead of Cooper Connolly. PBKS may wish to divide their three left-handers. Mukesh beats Iyer's outside edge with a length ball while the ball is still in motion. He bowls two wides in the over but concedes only six.

DC pulls it back while Tiwari wins Arya
DC entered the game again in the final few overs. They have already inflicted a serious blow to PBKS by removing Arya for 56 off 33. And he is sent back by the rookie Madhav Tiwari, who is bowling for the first time in the IPL. He started by bowling Arya a short ball that flew past the hitter. In response, Arya lofted the subsequent delivery over extra cover for four. However, Arya mistimed a similar short, albeit of a shorter length, to deep cover, where Sahil Parakh held onto the catch, giving Tiwari the upper hand.
Connolly enters the game at number four and uses a backwards point off Starc to start his account with a four.
After ten, PBKS 107/2
Iyer sustains PBKS
Iyer has sustained PBKS while Connolly is on eight off nine balls. He is now 27 out of 17. He "hit" Ngidi for a straight six in the twelfth over. Iyer was defeated in the air by a slower ball. The lower hand fell off early in the shot, but that also gave him the extension. The ball continued to float and passed the straight boundary even though the mid-off was in the circle. The six measured 73 metres, although the border is 72 metres.
PBKS 125/2 after 12
Connolly provides impetus
Connolly has given the innings the much-needed momentum just when it appeared to be stagnating. In the next over, he struck Ngidi for a four and a six off consecutive deliveries after launching Starc over long-off for a 96-meter six.
PBKS 162/2 after 16. PBKS would be looking at at least 210 with eight wickets.
Axar hasn't bowled yet
Axar Patel has yet to bowl. Was it because the middle batsman for PBKS was always a left-hander? Or is it simply that DC is getting ready for the upcoming season and wants to give others a chance? It appears that he will not be rolling over tonight, for whatever reason. The last two overs will be bowled by Ngidi and Starc.
Shedge confronts Starc
Iyer hits two sixes, and Connolly hits a boundary in Tiwari's last over, which ends at 19. Connolly was removed by Tiwari with a slower bouncer, and his spell ended with 2 for 40.
Starc took two wickets off the first two balls in the penultimate over. Shashank to mid-off, and Stoinis to additional cover. However, Shedge sent Starc back over his head for a six, displaying no fear when confronted with the hat-trick ball. For the next delivery, Starc gave it his all. Shedge showed cunning by chipping it over mid-off for four. Starc was pushed well past the deep-midwicket boundary after going around the wicket for the last ball. It covered 100 metres.
After 19, PBKS 203/5
PBKS ends at 210 for five
For the twentieth over, Ngidi had just four fielders beyond the 30-yard circle because of the slow over rate. However, he gave up just three singles off the first five balls and performed his dipping, slower balls flawlessly. Shedge put away a full toss for four in the last delivery.
Fast bowlers bowled all twenty overs. The last time it occurred in the IPL was when SRH defeated RCB in 2016.
Shashank's impact player is Yash Thakur
Yash Thakur has been signed by PBKS as Shashank Singh's impact player. Ashutosh Sharma has already been selected by DC to succeed Mukesh Kumar.
Can DC successfully pursue a record?
In a Twenty20 match in Dharamsala, a side has successfully chased down 200. In 2015, South Africa did that to India. The Chennai Super Kings' 193 in that historic match against Kings XI Punjab in 2010 was the highest successful chase in the IPL. This is the entire list.

Porel's centre stump is uprooted by Thakur
Thakur makes an immediate impression in his debut game of the season. He delivers one on nice length in the line of the stumps while circling the wicket. Porel gets bowled while playing all around it. The central stump is not in its groove.
Sahil Parakh is ranked third.

Rahul gets Arshdeep
In the PBKS dugout, Ricky Ponting is beaming broadly. The cause? Marco Jansen has made a fantastic catch. Rahul went for the pull after Arshdeep's hard-length delivery. However, the ball hurried him, and all he could produce was a top edge that travelled in the direction of the empty short fine leg area. Prabhsimran began running to get underneath it, but Jansen's large strides quickly overtook him, and he made a dive to finish the capture.

The batter is put in an uncomfortable, cramped position when Parakh charges at the bowler but draws his length back. Parakh attempts to use the ramp but is unsuccessful. Chahal nearly makes a mess of it as the ball approaches him at a low height that is still ideal for catching. Finally, he clings to it with his body. He is quickly shown what he accomplished there by Arshdeep. Everything goes smoothly, and everyone at the PBKS camp is grinning.

Arshdeep gives up Stubbs
The bug is back, too. Stubbs chips a length ball that Dwarshuis bowls towards long-on. When Arshdeep rushes in, it's about the midriff and at a comfortable height, but he drops it. Axar then delivers two consecutive fours to finish it off.
Stubbs' run-out exacerbates DC's problems
Dwarshuis gets a backwards point dab from Axar Patel. Stubbs detects a single and rushes down the other end, but he stays in his crease. Before realising Axar isn't interested, he covers three-fourths of the field. Connolly's weaker side, the right, receives the ball. However, he manoeuvres and hits the bowler's end with a direct hit. Stubbs makes a valiant attempt but falls far short.
However, Shedge puts Axar off the next delivery, continuing PBKS's up-and-down day. Dwarshuis delivered it in full, and Axar flicked it uppishly in the direction of deep square leg. Shedge was unable to grip onto the slide after charging in.

Axar and Miller continue to pursue DC
Like DC, PBKS is solely dependent on its fast bowler. Miller pulls Stoinis for a flat six over deep midwicket when he comes in for the eleventh over. Axar hits Dwarshuis for a six in the subsequent over.
After 12 overs, DC is now 113 for 4. Dew could help them, but they still need 98 from eight. We witnessed Shedge losing his footing as he charged in to stop because the ground had turned so slick.
PBKS addons for gifts
PBKS has given up 15 runs in 13 overs thus far.
PBKS has used their right to have the ball changed because it is so damp. That ought to bring some relief. However, Chahal is still missing. Stoinis will use a dry ball to bowl.

Axar, the hitter, has had a difficult tournament. He has only allowed 44 runs in eight innings at a 6.3 average going into this game. Tonight, though, he has moved past it. He hits Stoinis for a hat-trick of fours, the second of which is a fifty off 28 balls. But in an attempt to end the over with a six, he holes out to long-on.
After 14, DC is 138/5. They need 73 from six overs.
Bowling out Arshdeep
Arshdeep has just one over remaining after bowling three in the power play, so Iyer chooses to put him in for the fifteenth. He finishes with two for twenty-one and gives up just five.
With Miller and Ashutosh at the crease, DC needs 68 in five overs.
Miller restores DC's progress
It has been an exhilarating experience. Miller smacks Jansen for a six and a four after the quiet Arshdeep over, and Ashutosh ends the over with another boundary. DC took 15 from it in all.
Chahal appears to have injured his left shoulder while attempting to halt that last boundary. He hasn't bowled an over yet tonight, and he might not.
DC must score 53 in four overs.
DC is still the favourite despite Miller 6, 6 out
Miller hit two huge sixes to start the 17th over. DC appeared to be the favourite all of a sudden. However, he top-edged a third six on his pull attempt. Prabhsimran completed the catch close to the short third by running forward and making a dive.
If you believed that DC's story was ended, you were wrong. To begin, Tiwari carved a four through backwards point. Iyer went to Stoinis for the 18th when Arshdeep was bowled out, and Ashutosh and Tiwari destroyed him. From that, they obtained 19.
DC requires 17 of 12.
DC gives PBKS its fourth straight loss
Tiwari smacks Yash Thakur to deep third for four after he starts the 19th over with a dot. After two balls, Ashutosh holes out to deep midwicket after uppercutting him for a six. For a brief while, the story seemed to be taking a different turn. Nabi, however, pulled a high full toss from Thakur for four. The scores were tied because it was a no-ball as well. Nabi blasted a six over long-off after Thakur delivered another full toss.
DC is still in the running for the playoffs after that victory. However, PBKS has already suffered four straight losses. After 11 games, they are still stuck at 13 points.
After ten, DC 87/4
