The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have not fared well in the 2026 Indian Premier League. This season, it seems like an injury blow knocks them down every time they rise. The most recent setback is Jamie Overton's thigh injury, which came after he won Player-of-the-Match in their most recent game against the eliminated Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

News about the team
LSG might replace Digvesh Rathi with Mohsin Khan since the Lucknow pitch is expected to help the quicks. If not, they probably won't change from their most recent encounter with CSK.
LSG XII (probable): 1 Josh Inglis, 2 Mitchell Marsh, 3 Nicholas Pooran, 4 Rishabh Pant (capt & wk), 5 Aiden Markram, 6 Akshat Raghuwanshi, 7 Shahbaz Ahmed, 8 Himmat Singh, 9 Mohammed Shami, 10 Avesh Khan, 11 Prince Yadav, 12 Mohsin Khan/Digvesh Rathi
Overton has no comparable replacement at CSK. If Spencer Johnson is available, they might turn to him because Matt Henry had trouble earlier in the season. They might be short in batting as a result of the transfer, though. Dian Forrester, a South African all-rounder, has been signed to replace Overton, but he won't be able to play on Friday.
CSK XII (probable): 1 Ruturaj Gaikwad (capt), 2 Sanju Samson (wk), 3 Urvil Patel, 4 Kartik Sharma, 5 Dewald Brevis, 6 Shivam Dube, 7 Prashant Veer, 8 Akeal Hosein, 9 Anshul Kamboj, 10 Spencer Johnson/Matt Henry, 11 Noor Ahmad, 12 Mukesh Choudhary
The issue with pants
Rishabh Pant has the lowest victory percentage among IPL captains who have led in at least 10 games since he smashed the auction record and assumed leadership of LSG in 2025. With just three victories in 11 games this season, LSG is fighting MI to avoid last place. Pant's batting returns have also decreased. In 24 innings for LSG, he has only scored 50 runs three times. With a victory percentage of 55.18 at the Delhi Capitals, he has demonstrated in the past that he is a better captain than this. If LSG is to continue believing in their captain for the upcoming season, he must find his magic.
CSK substitutes
Indian fast bowler Kuldip Yadav has been selected by CSK to replace Khaleel Ahmed due to injury. After playing five games this season and taking two wickets at an economy rate of 8.67, Khaleel's stint came to an end after he sustained a right quadricep injury against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
In addition, CSK paid INR 75 lakh to get South African all-rounder Dian Forrester to replace Overton. Since making his debut in March of this year, Forrester, 25, has represented South Africa in five Twenty20 international matches. For the 2025–2026 SA20, he was also a member of the Johannesburg Super Kings team.
Another low-scoring game?
The match will take place on Pitch No. 4, the site of two IPL 2026 games with low scores. This year, LSG has struggled on this specific track, losing both of its games after being bowled out for 141 and 119. In those matches, 23 of the 30 wickets were taken by fast bowlers. Spinners have just slightly outperformed fast bowlers in all IPL matches played on this track since 2024 (economy rate of 9.35 for spinners vs. 9.51 for fast bowlers).
Round 2 of LSG vs. CSK
The first round went to CSK in Chennai, where Chepauk sang his name and Jamie Overton put on a Man-of-the-Match display. Due to a thigh injury, he has since returned to the UK, placing CSK in a precarious situation. CSK has already lost 20 players due to injuries. Will Spencer Johnson, who is speedy from Australia, be their 21st player? However, such a move could disrupt their batting depth. Their bowling will be diminished if they choose someone like Matt Short. CSK's team management has a lot to think about. LSG will play for pride as they are no longer in the running for the playoffs.
Spencer Johnson is the main emphasis
Spencer Johnson, an Australian left-arm fast bowler, made his CSK run-up in Lucknow. He is recuperating from a back ailment that kept him out of the BBL and the T20 World Cup. Since the 2025 Indian Premier League, Johnson has not participated in elite cricket.
To avoid more back problems, Johnson has started working with Ryan Harris, a former fast bowler for Australia. "We've been doing that ever since he's been able to roll his arm over," Harris stated earlier this year in March. "We have been making a few adjustments. And he's doing fantastically. The day before yesterday, he had a bowl. Although I wasn't present, I did some video work. And we've been paying close attention to what he's attempting to accomplish, straightening him out a bit, and attempting to relieve some of the pressure on that back.
"But he's done it really well. He feels like, although he's only going about 60%, the ball's coming out nicely. So as we speak, he's bowling more. He's trying to crank it up. And it's just now about getting bowling load into his body to be able to allow him to go and play."
CSK brings in Spencer Johnson; LSG chooses to bowl
The Lucknow Super Giants will bowl against the Chennai Super Kings.
After winning the toss, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant requested that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bat first on what he described as a "tacky" wicket. Ruturaj Gaikwad, his counterpart, was equally concerned by Lucknow's red soil surface, which suggested some moisture was there.
CSK had to make two adjustments due to the injury to all-rounder Jamie Overton, who will miss the remainder of the current season. Australia's left-arm fast Spencer Johnson, who hasn't played competitive cricket since IPL 2025, was given a franchise debut. He is recovering from a back injury. When CSK bowls later in the evening, left-arm quick Gurjapneet Singh is most likely to enter from the Impact Sub bench. Gaikwad declared Gurjapneet to be their Impact Sub at the toss, ruling out Akeal Hosein's possible inclusion.
Prashant Veer, who was CSK's Impact Player in their last match against LSG in Chennai, made his debut in the starting lineup on Friday and will play at his home stadium. CSK will move up to the top four if they win today.
However, Pant stated that LSG is already out of the running for the playoffs and is focusing on the upcoming campaign. They gave left-arm seamer Akash Singh his first game of the season against his old team as part of those long-term intentions. Mukul Choudhary and Abdul Samad, two middle-order hitters, also made a comeback to the LSG lineup. Akshat Raghuwanshi and Himmat Singh left the team. Mayank Yadav, a tearaway, received his third game of the season, while Avesh Khan was also left out.
Josh Inglis will play as LSG's Impact Player when they chase, despite not being included in their bowl-first lineup.
CSK bat-first XI: 1 Ruturaj Gaikwad (capt), 2 Sanju Samson (wk), 3 Urvil Patel, 4 Kartik Sharma,5 Dewald Brevis, 6 Shivam Dube, 7 Prashant Veer, 8 Anshul Kamboj, 9 Spencer Johnson, 10 Noor Ahmad,11 Mukesh Choudhary
CSK Impact Subs bench: Gurjapneet Singh, Akeal Hosein, Sarfaraz Khan, Matthew Short, Matt Henry
LSG bowl-first XI: 1 Mitchell Marsh, 2 Nicholas Pooran, 3 Rishabh Pant (capt & wk), 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Mukul Choudhary, 6 Abdul Samad, 7 Shahbaz Ahmed, 8 Mohammed Shami, 9 Mayank Yadav, 10 Akash Singh, 11 Prince Yadav
LSG Impact Subs bench: Josh Inglis, M Siddharth, Digvesh Rathi, Himmat Singh, Ayush Badoni
CSK shakes things up
This season, Spencer Johnson is CSK's twenty-first player. In IPL 2026, only MI and LSG, their opponents today, have utilised more players.
Samson immediately gets his rhythm
0 4 0 4 4 1w 0
Shami's opening ball is precisely the right length. It skips past the outer edge and angles in. However, Samson creates a swinging room, stands a good distance outside leg, and hits Shami for two fours through the off side. Shami spears one down the leg side while those boundaries interfere with his line.
Samson uses an inside edge to reach the fine-leg boundary for his third four. After the opening over, CSK is 13 for 0.
On flames, Akki
In contrast to Shami, Akash is not offering Samson and Gaikwad the drive ball since he is striking a hard length on this red soil surface. He even uses a crisp lifter that climbs past Samson's helmet to beat him on the hook in his second over. LSG review is pointless. He has Gaikwad flapping a catch to mid-on after cramping him on the pull in the same over. 13 runs off of nine balls. Akash takes a note out of his pocket.
"#Akki on fire- Akash knows how to take wickets in a T20 game"
His first ball to Urvil is a snorter that rises off the surface and tangles the newcomer. Urvil almost repels it with a fly slide. In his first game of the season, Akash had a fantastic start.

His first ball to Urvil is a snorter that rises off the surface and tangles the newcomer. Urvil almost repels it with a fly slide. In his first game of the season, Akash had a fantastic start.
Akash eliminates Samson
Akash had three overs in the power play. Samson was one of the two wickets. Another hard-length delivery on the stumps is delivered by Akash. This is not so much a short-arm pull from Samson as it is a short-arm flap. On the leg side, he holes out to the lone man on the boundary. A run-a-ball 20 was lost.
Akash pulls out another letter and gestures to his head. At 37 for 2 in six overs, CSK is faltering. During the power play, only four of Akash's eighteen balls were longer than a decent length.
Mayank's dismal beginning
1w 0 4 2 0 1 1w 1w 4
Mayank lacks match practice, according to LSG bowling coach B Arun during his press conference in Chennai. In his debut over here, he bowled like a bowler lacking in match practice, giving up 14 runs, including three wides. Kartik and Urvil pulled him away for fours when he made the mistake of being overly full.
Akash goes bam bang bang
One more brief ball on the body. On the pull, another batter cramped. Akash has another wicket. Another note has been taken out. CSK is already at 52 for 3 in the eighth over after Urvil was removed for 6 off 7 balls.
The line is off, but Akash's first ball to Brevis is short. Brevis had an opportunity to release his arms and scythe him over point for a first-ball six when he pushes it too wide outside off.
Akash completes his spell with a single stroke: 4-0-26-3. These are his greatest IPL numbers.
Kartik Sharma versus pace and spin
Shahbaz Ahmed makes an effort to match Akash's length. From left-arm around, he darts in a thigh-high delivery on the stumps. However, Kartik swots it over midwicket after picking up the length so early. That has Ambati Rayudu-like qualities.
Kartik faced seasoned domestic spinners like Shreyas Gopal and Sai Kishore in the most recent domestic season. He is now demonstrating to everyone that he is capable of being a spin hitter in the IPL. Mike Hussey, the batting coach at CSK, is so pleased with Kartik's potential that he thinks he can become a long-term member of the team.
Oh! He is also capable of batting against express pace. In the twelfth over, Kartik backs away from Mayank, reveals his stumps, and carves a 144-k hard-length delivery to the right of point. Kartik receives a hip-high delivery off Prince in the following over and places it over midwicket.
Brevis takes shape
Brevis sustained an injury at the beginning of the IPL season. Then he sprang into patchwork shape. However, he appears to have found some form today. When he makes the no-look six, you know he's in form.
Try informing Brevis that the straight borders at the Ekana are larger than those on the square. He pumps Shahbaz over long-on after lining up a fullish ball from him. He makes it appear really cool by tucking his chin into his chest.
Kartik fifty!
Kartik smacks a slowie over extra cover for six after lining it up outside off of Shami. On a challenging track, he reaches his fifty off 35 balls. From the dugout, Coach Fleming cheers. Prashant Veer, his close friend, is standing. Kartik touches his lips with his finger as well. Despite his high price tag, he has eased himself into the IPL with two fifties in his previous four innings.
But in the fifteenth over, Shami bounces Brevis out with the following ball, leaving CSK at 122 for 4.
Kartik versus Shahbaz
1 6 4 4 0 W
Kartik aligns Shahbaz's left-arm spin and hits him for 6,4,4 in this, his sixteenth over. Kartik hits his highest T20 score of 71 off 42 balls after trying to find the boundary for the fourth time in the over. Shahbaz darts it into Kartik, who is unable to get underneath the length, after going considerably fuller. CSK is 142 for 5 after 16 overs.
CSK: 187 for five
Mayank finished with 4-0-26-0 after giving up 14 runs in his first over. On this surface, though, cameos from Dube and Veer raise CSK to what appears to be an above-average 187 for 5. In the last over, when LSG was penalised for slow-over rate, Dube smashes an undefeated 32 off 16 balls, including two sixes and two fours.
LSG is off to a fast start in the pursuit
Mukesh Choudhary gives up 15 runs in his opening over after mishandling his lines. Johnson, on the other hand, is tighter. With his second ball, he accelerates it to 144 kph, and his third ball results in a mis-hit. Inglis's sliced pull avoids Noor's outstretched hands as he runs back from midwicket.
Marsh gives Kamboj the lead in the third over and shimmies out to provide swinging room. For four, he smashes Kamboj through the cover-point area. In three overs, LSG is 31 for 0.
Marsh tees off
6 6 6 6 0 4
Marsh prefers to bat on pitches with real bounce. For the first six overs, he charges Kamboj, creates swinging room, and flays him over cover. Kamboj is taken aback by this. He becomes shorter and veers away from his hard length. Overall, Marsh hits Kamboj four consecutive sixes. A dot is the fifth ball. Marsh just helps it away on its way to finish a 28-run over in the sixth, a full-toss down leg.
LSG: 86 for nothing
In the powerplay versus CSK earlier this week in Chennai, LSG shot up to 91 for 1. They have now struck 86 for 0 in the six overs in Lucknow, with Marsh accounting for 56 of those runs. A challenging chase might become a stroll thanks to Marsh's blitz.
Our stats guru, Sampath Bandarupalli: LSG's previous four IPL games have produced their top three powerplay totals: 90/1 at Wankhede, 91/1 at Chepauk, and 86/0 today.
After an incredible stand, Inglis and Marsh collapse
In the 12th over, Mukesh Choudhary uses a slower variation to end the first stand at 135. Inglis is dismissed for 36 from 32 balls after he conceals it from his swinging arc. Marsh is out for 90 off 38 balls at the non-striker's end of the subsequent ball. Marsh is caught short as Choudhary deflects the drive onto the stumps after Pooran drills one straight back. Marsh didn't score a century. However, LSG continues to lead this pursuit.
Johnson topples Samad
In the fourteenth over, Spencer Johnson gives CSK another chance when he dismisses Samad for seven runs off three balls. In his CSK debut, he ended with a score of 4-0-39-1, leaving LSG in need of 42 off 36 balls. Not quite a pair of pants. To preserve the left-right opening combination, Choudhary has been moved up to No. 5.

LSG defeats CSK
Chennai Super Kings 187 for 5 (Kartik 71, Dube 32, Akash 3-26) were defeated by Lucknow Super Giants 188 for 3 (Marsh 90, Inglis 36, Choudhary 1-24) by seven wickets.
The Chennai Super Kings' chances of making the playoffs were damaged by Mitchell Marsh's boundary-rich 90 off 38 balls, which also gave the Lucknow audience something to celebrate. Following the outcome, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fell from fifth to sixth place as Rajasthan Royals (RR) outperformed them in net run-rate.
Marsh blasted 56 of the 86 runs that the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) had hit during the powerplay as they pursued 188. Nicholas Pooran raised the score to 100% after Marsh fell ten short of a century, securing LSG's fourth victory of the year. Even though they won by seven wickets with twenty balls remaining, they were still at the bottom of the points standings.
