Chennai Super Kings defeated Delhi Capitals 189 (Stubbs 60, Nissanka 41, Overton 4-18, Kamboj 3-35) by 23 runs at 212 for 2 (Samson 115*, Mhatre 59 retired out, Axar 1-39).

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won for the first time in IPL 2026 and at home after six straight losses dating back to the previous season thanks to Sanju Samson's first century.

In the first six overs of the powerplay, Samson scored 45 of CSK's 61 runs. When he hit his half-century off 26 balls, more than 32,000 supporters were whistling at Chepauk. When he turned it into a 52-ball century, those supporters started yelling his name and whistling louder.

CSK reached 212 for 2 thanks to a fifty from Mhatre before he was retired and a cameo from Shivam Dube. But when DC's openers Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul blasted past fifty in the fourth over of their chase, that total seemed smaller. After that, DC lost control of the chase as CSK struck three times in the following three overs.

Stubbs battled with 60 off 38 balls, but he was unable to overcome the increasing asking rate. The key to CSK's strong defence was Jamie Overton's 4 for 18, which included the valuable scalp of Stubbs.

Overton strikes once more

Overton punches his fist and roars. After making the catch at deep midwicket, Brevis turns to face the spectators. Chepauk is enjoying himself with the CSK boys once more after a long absence.

Mobiles and flags are displayed in the stands. The sound of the whistles has increased.

Overton can hit this hard length well. He goes after the stumps. The length cannot be pulled. Rizvi holes out for six off nine balls after shaping to pull. In eight overs, DC is 76 for 4 while chasing 213.A fan yells, "Belated Happy Birthday, Overton!" in front of the media box.

Gurjapneet hits the opening ball

DC drops from 61 for 0 to 66 for 3. On his IPL debut at home, Gurjapneet Singh scores with his first ball. He digs it wide and short, and Sarfaraz catches Axar at the point. Sarfaraz makes a fantastic grab as he dives across to his right. He embarks on a joyous journey. Gurjapneet's extra bounce gives CSK a chance to take wickets.

For Gurjapneet, what a moment! He relocated to Chennai from Ludhiana and Ambala for times like these. His IPL debut has been delayed. Brevis took his spot after he was hurt during the previous season. He was a net bowler for CSK before that. Samson approaches Gurjapneet after the over is finished and pats him on the back.

CSK is going crazy

CSK had scored 61 for 0 in the powerplay earlier in the evening. DC has now lost Rahul for 18 off 10 balls after matching that mark in five overs.

Khaleel Ahmed jams the opening on the pull and smashes one into Rahul's upper body from left-arm around the wicket. At midwicket, Rahul splices it in the air but is unable to get it past Overton. In five overs, DC is 61 for 1. If Khaleel hadn't dropped Nissanka on 41 at short fine leg, the score could have been 61 for 2 in 5.2 overs.

Nissanka chips the following ball to mid-on, so Khaleel's mistake doesn't cost CSK anything. CSK is coming back strong in this match.

KL Rahul scores 10 runs off two balls while Akeal Hosein targets his pads, demonstrating the benefit of a batter willing to shuffle his feet against spin. The batsman creates space and changes a flat ball on middle stump into one where he has plenty of room to hit over mid-off. Later, he anticipates the change in length and dances down the track to knock a six over mid-off, but all of his plans end up in the trash. Pathum Nissanka attacks, but he stays in his crease and is simpler to contain with those shortish darts that are slanted into the body.

CSK immediately threw the ball to their impact player after selecting him. Akeal Hosein will start the bowling session. Sanju Samson, who batted for the entire 20 overs while also getting lower back treatment from the physiotherapist, is also off the pitch. The wicketkeeper is Kartik Sharma.

Hosein has taken nine wickets at an economy rate of 8.2 in the T20 powerplay this year.

This season, CSK has struggled greatly with no-balls. Tim David's stumps were taken by Anshul Kamboj's bowling, but he overstepped and RCB scored 250. Hosein has bowled two no-balls in the opening over while defending 212.

Dube's unbroken 20 from 10 balls in his cameo propels CSK to 212 for 2. At 115 off 56 balls, Samson is still undefeated. Ngidi's boundary-less 17th over keeps DC in the match. Ashutosh is expected to enter the game as an Impact Player, giving DC enough batting depth to get a good shot at the target.

After 15 overs, Samson also slowed down. Now, in the 18th over bowled by Natarajan, he reaches his first century for CSK off 52 balls. So far, Samson has been brutal with the left-arm fast, dismissing him for 33 off 13 balls.

Mhatre and Samson continue to score for CSK

Kuldeep Yadav tosses one off. He conceals it from the batter's swinging arc. After giving it a shot, Mhatre is able to drag it barely over Stubbs over long-on. Kuldeep then watches as the ball is pushed over extra-cover after bowling it into the pitch and wide of off against Samson.

After waiting for Ngidi's slower ball to arrive in the following over, Mhatre hits a six over his head. Today at Chepauk, Ngidi's slower balls aren't holding. In 13 overs, CSK is 130 for 1.

Had Rahul not missed a run-out opportunity, Mhatre might have been removed on 9. How much will DC have to pay?

Samson is fifty!

Samson scores his first half-century for CSK off of 26 balls. At Chepauk, 30,273 fans went crazy. The Illuminati song from the film Avesham is blasted by the DJ. Samson has a lot more attractive features.

Alright, Samson missed a 97-kph dart from Axar to wide long-off on 52, giving DC an opportunity to halt him. Nissanka sprints to his left but misses the opportunity. What happens to the subsequent ball? Samson retreats, creates swinging room, and flat-bats Axar at long-on to Miller's left and Nissanka's right.

Samson hits his first six, which is also CSK's first six, after making eleven fours. His yorker is missed by Natarajan. The result is a full-toss that is hit over the midwicket boundary.

CSK scored 61 runs during the powerplay. 45 of those off 19 balls had been Samson's fault.

Samson even sends the slower ball to the boundary, but Ngidi ducks into it after picking it up from Dwayne Bravo during CSK training sessions at this very location. He scythes his shape away to the cover boundary after maintaining it for a sufficient amount of time. In the first six overs, Samson had hit nine boundaries. Gaikwad, on the other hand, has only managed one boundary as far.

For CSK, Samson is off to a fast start. Right now, he's on 22* off nine balls.

Samson swats the rookie over mid-on for another four after slicing Nabi for four in the first over. Samson flipped and drove Mukesh for back-to-back fours after he erred too full while looking for swing. Chepauk's whistles are blowing after Samson's opening salvo.

When Samson moves away from Axar and pumps him over extra-cover, the whistles get louder. Now, Samson has quickly reached 30 off 12 balls.

DC chooses to bowl and gives Nabi his IPL debut

The Delhi Capitals will bowl against the Chennai Super Kings.

On a brand-new red-soil field at Chepauk, Delhi Capitals skipper Axar Patel chose to bowl against Chennai Super Kings after winning the toss. One alteration they made was to replace legspin-bowling all-rounder Vipraj Nigam with seamer Auqib Nabi. Nabi's debut IPL match will be this one.

During Jammu & Kashmir's drive to their first Ranji Trophy triumph, Nabi, 29, was the leading wicket-taker with 60 strikes. When DC chases, Ashutosh Sharma or Nitish Rana might be the Impact Player.

CSK made two changes: they gave Tamil Nadu left-arm quick Gurjapneet Singh his IPL debut and brought back middle-order batsman Dewald Brevis, who has adequately recovered from a side injury. Both local left-arm spin spinner Prashant Veer, who has not yet bowled in the IPL, and New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry were left out.

Gurjapneet, 27, is one of the top death bowlers in the Tamil Nadu Premier League and most recently played for India A.

Other than Brevis, the foreign players in CSK's bat-first lineup were Jamie Overton and Noor. Kartik Sharma, who was on the Impact Sub bench, had no spot. However, when CSK bowls later in the evening, they might think about using Akeal Hosein as an Impact Sub.

Even though Dhoni is still recovering from his injuries, there is a lot of talk about Chepauk on this Saturday night. Dhoni is everywhere in Chepauk.
